From the novels we have read this year, our concept of dreams is that they show what we truly want or desire. Lennie, from Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, wanted to tend rabbits and Pip, from Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, wanted to become a gentleman. Dreams also have another purpose by influencing our lives. We come up with our dreams, our dreams motivate us, and then we achieve them.
Our lives our influenced by the dreams and goals we make. A goal is something a person wants to accomplish or attain. There is something to setting goals and dreaming, or better yet, hoping. We live our lives in hope of achieving our dreams. Whether these dreams are to make it to the Olympics or go to college, everything we accomplish in our lives revolves around hope of achieving our goals. A goal has a direction or targets a desired destination. The lifes we live are not here just to waste, we want to go some where and do something with them. Without these dreams our lives would be boring and pointless. There would be no drive to go on. Most significant accomplishments are riddled with obstacles, struggles, and failures. It is estimated that Thomas Edison failed over one thousand times before he finally discovered a way to make the light bulb work. It is very rare for something important to be accomplished successfully on the very first try. But Thomas Edison had the drive to keep finding a better light bulb.
Developing your dreams is very important; however, statistics show that only 9 out of 10 people make their dreams come true. This is because we don’t let them help us get motivated. When everyone is little, there are no boundaries, limits, or expectations to follow by. Our dreams motivate us to be the minority to make it, and they get us excited to do something great. Zadok Rabinowitz once said: “a man’s dreams are an index to his greatness”; because our dreams give us something to live for and if you want it then you would pay any price to obtain it. Everyday people use this mindset because to them their dreams really matter. Everyday people with some of the craziest dreams have really made a difference. “You need imagination for direction” and “to be successful you need to combine your imagination with reality” (Peter Dobler, website 2). Take for example the “Space Race”. At the time, the dream that men could be in space seemed unrealistic. But the dream to be the first success was too overwhelming because the men at NASA were curious about space. Of course, they also wanted to achieve greatness and they let their curiosity and desire fuel them. In the end, the U.S. was triumphant over Russia, and their goal was achieved. Through motivation, dreams give us a reason to wake up everyday. They give us a motive to be a part of the rare few that make a difference.

As easy as it may sound, achieving your dreams is actually quite difficult for most people. However, according to personaldevelopment.com, all you really have to do are the 4 Ds: dream it, dedicate yourself, do it, and don’t give up. Once you have your dream you are ready to dedicate yourself to accomplish your goal. An excellent way to dedicate yourself is to write down your dreams. Something about seeing them on paper makes you want to accomplish them more. Once you are one-hundred percent dedicated you are ready to do it. This can be tricky but all you have to do is believe in yourself no matter what others say. You will probably have to work hard to accomplish your dreams but if you are willing to learn and expand yourself along the way, you should have no problem reaching your dreams. Judi Moreo, author of Achievement Journal: You Are More Than Enough, said, “If you want something, it’s not enough to just think about it, you have to actively pursue it.” Finally, the fourth D: don’t give up. When something doesn’t go your way you have to open yourself up and accept different possibilities. You need to also stay inspired by thinking positive. Even if you reach obstacles or hard times, you have to keep going until you have reached your goal. You can never give up. Although it is tough, anyone can achieve their dreams by following the 4 Ds. Whenever you have a dream, never let it go. Instead, achieve it because remember that the feeling you get when you reach your dreams is priceless.
